Cat Quest III

The Gentlebros team, a dedicated quartet of developers, has been delighting fans with their Cat Quest series for years. Each installment has introduced fresh elements to the gameplay, but the core remains unchanged: whimsical action RPGs featuring our feline friends. Cat Quest III continues this tradition, where clever puns and playful humor take precedence over a deep narrative. While the story may not capture your imagination, the game’s charming visuals and engaging gameplay ensure a fun experience.

A Pirate’s Tale

In Cat Quest III, the cat and dog kingdoms have united for a common cause. However, this time, our meowing hero embarks on a solo adventure, accompanied only by a spectral guide with minimal impact. You step into the paws of a pirate—referred to as a Murr brigand by the developers. According to legend, a fallen star with the power to grant wishes was hidden away long ago to prevent its misuse. As the Seeker, our protagonist sets sail for the Murribean Sea in search of this elusive treasure.

Our hero is not alone in this quest. The King of Rats and his crew, the Meowtallica, stand in his way. The storyline, like its predecessors, remains simple and light-hearted, with the narrative driven by humor rather than depth. Expect a parade of cat-themed puns and playful references, but don’t anticipate complex plot twists or memorable characters.

Sailing and Combat

One of the standout features of Cat Quest III is the ability to explore the open world via a pirate ship. This feature, unlocked early in the game, allows you to navigate to various islands, discover hidden treasures, and engage in sea battles. The ship, equipped with cannons, adds an extra layer of fun to the gameplay. You can dodge enemy fire and fire back with ordinary and special cannonballs. It’s all presented in a cartoonish style that keeps the experience light-hearted and enjoyable.

However, the ship does have a minor drawback: if damaged, it cannot be repaired directly. Instead, you must wait for it to be completely destroyed before calling for a new one at the dock. Fortunately, as you upgrade your ship and master its controls, this becomes less of a concern.

Exploration and Combat System

The open world is designed for exploration. You’re free to sail to any island, engage in battles for experience points, or investigate ruins and side quests. The game’s frequent save points minimize the risk of losing progress, encouraging players to delve into every corner of the map.

Combat is straightforward and revolves around a single button for attacks, though different weapons offer various bonuses. Close combat weapons include sabers, claws, and shields, while ranged weapons feature muskets, shotguns, and magical staffs. While enemies do not have specific weaknesses, the variety of weapons and spells allows for some strategic play. Spells, which use replenishable energy, can turn the tide in tough battles, though the combat system remains relatively simple.

Charm and Replayability

Despite its simplicity, Cat Quest III is engaging thanks to its charming graphics and numerous puns. The game offers a variety of activities, including exploring, solving puzzles, and completing side quests. The “New Game +” mode and the “Tower of Infinity” challenge provide additional reasons to return, with increased difficulty and rewards.

In many ways, Cat Quest III stays true to its roots, offering what fans of the series have come to expect: a playful, charming adventure with a focus on fun rather than complexity. It may not reinvent the wheel, but it delivers an enjoyable experience for those who appreciate its unique style.

Pros:

  • Delightful graphics and humor
  • Fun open-world exploration and ship travel
  • Engaging side quests and collectibles
  • Replayability through “New Game +” and “Tower of Infinity”

Cons:

  • Story remains simplistic and unremarkable
  • Combat system is basic and may become repetitive

Cat Quest III is a solid continuation of the series, perfect for fans and newcomers alike who are looking for a light-hearted, charming RPG experience.
